“Blest is the fruit of your womb” Luke 1:42
Dear Community of Saint Joseph's:
The first time you walk into the church of Saint Joseph's in Capitola by
the Sea, the first thing your mind
registers is the extraordinary color streaming into the space from
the stained glass windows. Everywhere you look there are panels of
scarlet, icy violets, cool greens and butter yellows. The original
intention of the early designers of multicolored glass windows was to
wash the person sitting in the pew in the ever-changing colors and shapes
created by the movement of the sun gleaming through the glass outside.
If you let your gaze wander to the left of our altar you will see a
magnificent stained glass window of our
patron Saint Joseph. He is a most significant person in the
story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Anxious about the circumstances
of the Virgin Mary's condition, he is preparing to leave her when he has
a dream reassuring him about the identity of Jesus. From the moment
of the dream Joseph never looks back. If you experience fear and
trepidation about the future, then the story of Saint Joseph is just the
inspiration you need to trust in God and hope in the unexpected potential
of your future.
Come to us this Christmas and allow us to remind you of the story of a young
carpenter and a virgin who make a long journey, survive a miraculous birth
and witness a dazzling star in the night sky.
Come to us this Christmas and be surrounded by the colors and lights of
our spectacular windows. They are, of course, merely a filter of the one true
light of the world which is Jesus Christ.
Come to us at Christmas and every Sunday and share in our joy to the
world!
