"Let the children come to me"
Mark 10:14
Dear Community of Saint Joseph’s; Bishop Garcia’s office recently released a statement
regarding the celebration of liturgy in the midst of concerns regarding the
Swine Flu (H1N1 virus). In the
statement the Bishop is permitting parishes to continue the practice of
communion under both species – body and blood.
Please do not receive from the cup if you are unwell at any time. And the Bishop is requesting that we
distribute communion only in the hand and not on the tongue. We should not receive from the cup when
feeling unwell at any time and if sick; the Bishop is encouraging us to remain
at home until we are feeling better. These directives are to help us during what is expected to
be a challenging time in protecting our health. And while we should be careful during this season by regularly
and vigorously washing our hands and staying home from work, school or church
when ill – it is impossible to keep the church and our celebrations
sterile. We gather together on Sunday
in the spirit of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We have always gathered in times of
distress, fear and uncertainty. As
human beings we have to face frightening possibilities and that is why our
faith and worship offer such great comfort and perspective. In attending mass on Sundays we are not only
draw strength from the celebration of the Sacraments but have the opportunity
to provide hope and encouragement to our friends and neighbors. May we be blessed by God with good health and good humor
this winter and at all times and seasons of our lives. Peace~ Father Matt Pennington Pastor
